Improved fuel economy of the 2016 Chevrolet Silverado now with a $500 hybrid system eAssist

A selected few models of the 2016 Silverado now comes with the eAssist mild-hybrid technology. These pick up trucks were developed by leveraging technology from Chevrolet’s electric vehicles. The battery cells from the Malibu Hybrid and software specifically comes from the Volt. The outcome is a practicably priced hybrid pick up with fuel economy.

Sandor Piszar commented that the Silverado, with the use of the eAssist can further reduce their fuel cost without sacrificing the utility the costumers expect from a full-size truck. This further compliments the Silverado that is already the leader in the full-size truck in the V8 fuel economy category.

A 5.3-liter four-cylinder V8 engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission already powers the 2016 Chevrolet Silverado, delivers 355 horsepower. Now with the eAssit mild-hybrid electrical system, raising the value at $500 above the standard Silverado price, brings in an electric motor and a 24-cell 0.45 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Even with a 100-pound excess weight, there is an additional 13 horsepower and 44 lb-ft. of torque gained by the Silverado eAssist model.

The hybrid system gives the Silverado pickup truck an additional 13 percent improvement in fuel economy. One of the ways this happens is from the Active Fuel Management system, Start/Stop capability and Regenerative Braking. The electric motor acts as a generator allowing the Active Fuel Management system to last longer. When the truck brakes it generates electricity that recharges the on-board battery pack. Fuel efficiency starts at 18 mpg for city driving, 24 mpg for highway driving, and 20 mpg for combined driving as estimated by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The 2016 Chevrolet Silverado eAssist trucks will be produced at 500 units for the year sold exclusively in California dealers. Production may increase for the 2017 models, depending on the customer demand and feedback. There will be 200 units of the 2016 GMC Sierra with eAssist with hybrid technology produced by Chevrolet this year.
